In my Mesoamerican ancestral culture we call the postpartum period (la cuarentena). It is a sacred time (40 days) in which the birthing person must be cared for through nutritional foods, herbs, oils, flowers, massage, household cleaning and more. I have been taught to support birthing individuals so that they can focus on healing, recuperating, and parenting. The goal is to support the new parent process the previous nine months of being pregnant + giving birth so that they can dive into their new parental role with ease. Visits are usually 5 hours, once a week for six weeks. Traditional Postpartum Care includes: -Herbal Vaginal Compress: Aids with soreness, redness, inflammation, supports healing any tearing -Traditional Vaginal Steaming: warms the uterus + relaxes pelvic floor, stimulating, cleansing, toning, oxygenating, and healing -Traditional Herbal Slap Bath: relaxes the body for closing of the hips, helps release any stored trauma, fills the body with herbal nutrients. -Nourishing Foods include: herbal infusions, Broths/Soups/Stews, Atoles, hot chocolate, fermented foods such as sauerkraut/curtido -Baby care and light house chores. -Closing ceremony- closing of the hips (After 40 days of postpartum) Brings down body inflammation, congestion, and spiritual heal-ment. Prevents susto (shock) . Herbal infusions: High in essential minerals + vitamins, promotes lactating milk, supports the healing of the uterus, and tends to the nervous system + the hormonal system. -Abdominal binding -Lactation Education/Support -Discount on Placenta Encapsulation/Burial Ritual -Personal Herbal Postnatal care kits: herbal tea blends, booty ointments for baby/mama, herbal salve for nipple pain, candles for relaxation, herbal tinctures, and essential oil blends for rejuvenating baths.
